In Appreciation of Bruce A. Lewis, Chief, University of Illinois at Chicago Police Department

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - June 17, 2003
Tuesday, June 17, 2003

WHEREAS, the Illinois Medical District was created by the State of Illinois on the Near West Side of Chicago in 1941, and at one square mile is now the largest urban medical district in the world and with a daily population of 75,000 employees, students, residents and visitors is truly "a city within a city"; and

WHEREAS,Bruce A. Lewis has faithfully served the University of Illinois at Chicago community as its Chief of Police for the past five years; and

WHEREAS, during that time Chief Bruce A. Lewis has proved his commitment to the safety of the patients, visitors, staff, students, employees, and residents of the Illinois Medical District; and

WHEREAS, the District Security Group of the Illinois Medical District was formed by the Illinois Medical District Commission and its member institutions in 1986 to further the security of the entire Illinois Medical District by creating a system of close communication, cooperation, and collaboration between all of the police and security departments with jurisdiction in and around the District; and

WHEREAS, Chief Bruce A. Lewis served as Chair of the Illinois Medical District Security Group and during his tenure his efforts significantly improved collaborative efforts of the Chicago Police Department, 12th District, Chicago Police Department, Transportation Section, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Illinois State Police Forensic Science Center at Chicago, John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County Police Department, Rush-Presbyterian-St. Luke's Medical Center Security Force, State of Illinois Central Management Services Police Department, University of Illinois at Chicago Police Department, and the VA Chicago Health Care System Police Department; and

WHEREAS, Chief Bruce A. Lewis' efforts have included obtaining grants and instituting such innovative crime prevention programs as the Comprehensive Auto Theft Study (CATS), Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) Window-Etching Program, and Coordinated Traffic Enforcement Programs to Reduce Speeding and Drunken Driving; and

WHEREAS, Chief Bruce A. Lewis' astuteness and dedication has contributed substantially to the continuing decrease in criminal activity and improvement of safety in the Illinois Medical District and the surrounding community.

NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that on this 17th day of June, 2003, the Illinois Medical District Commission wishes to express its appreciation and gratitude to University of Illinois at Chicago Police Chief Bruce A. Lewis and recognize his dedication, professionalism, and compassion in making the Illinois Medical District and the surrounding community one of the safest areas to visit, work, and live in the City of Chicago.

FURTHER, BE IT RESOLVED, that his fellow officers and the public be informed of Chief Bruce A. Lewis' meritorious service to public safety within the Illinois Medical District.

FURTHER, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Illinois Medical District Commission and staff join in expressing their best wishes to Chief Bruce A. Lewis for continued success in his new position as Police Chief of Northwestern University.
