The Illinois Medical District
Title
The IMD Act of 1941

Situated minutes west of downtown Chicago, the IMD landscape has grown with each passing generation. From the opening of Cook County Hospital in 1876, to the signing of the Illinois Medical District Act in 1941, and to the establishment of the Chicago Technology Park in 1984, the IMD has continued to evolve, prosper, and retain its status as one of the world’s premier medical districts.

As the first and largest urban medical district in the United States, the IMD continues to implement its coordinated plan to build facilities and communities focused on health care, medical research, and life science commerce. Through the Illinois Medical District Act, the IMD holds the authority to make critical decisions on zoning and development. It also has bonding authority that can be a powerful economic engine to help stimulate strategic new development within its boundaries.

Guided by the Illinois Medical District Commission (IMDC), a seven-member panel that includes appointees from the State of Illinois, Cook County, and the City of Chicago, the IMD continues to pursue its mission and vision.
