April 2003 - Ground is broken at the site of the long-awaited American Red Cross of Greater Chicago Disaster Operations Center. Construction of the facility will be complete in early 2004.

December 2002 - The new John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County opens for patient care.
November 2002 - The Veterans Administration breaks ground on a new Benefits Administration Center at Taylor and Ogden in the Illinois Medical District.

July 2002 - The Veteran's Administration announces IMD's West Side Medical Center will serve as the city's main veterans' health care center by 2010.
The American Red Cross of Greater Chicago announces it will locate its new command center and headquarters at Harrison and Leavitt. The center will be compatible with other 24-hour district operations.
June 2002 - IMD breaks ground on a new office building in the District Development Area.
May 2002 - United Therapeutics Corporation receives FDA approval for Remodulin to treat pulmonary arterial hypertension.
March 2002 - Construction begins on a new UIC College of Medicine building.
January 2002 - A new 9-acre retail center opens at Ashland and Roosevelt in the District Development Area, serving the area's communities and institutions.
