District Development
The Illinois Medical District Commission oversees zoning and land use within the boundaries of the District and has been charged with guiding the redevelopment of the area through the implementation of an active land acquisition program. Currently, the IMD's acquisition program is focused south of Roosevelt Road – the District Development Area – where the IMD is the majority property owner.

This redevelopment effort is one of the largest comprehensive redevelopment projects within the City of Chicago. For the past 7 years, the IMD has been acquiring and demolishing vacant, abandoned, older or dilapidated properties in order to assemble developable parcels for medical, governmental and institutional development, in accordance with the Illinois Medical District Act. This program continues to bear fruit, as current projects near completion in close proximity to or adjacent to existing new development. As part of this comprehensive redevelopment process, the IMD has coordinated and collaborated with other local government and regulatory agencies.

As a result of the IMD's special-use zoning, potential development projects must be reviewed and approved by the Illinois Medical District Commission. The Commission considers the input of existing District institutions during this process in order to ensure the compatibility of new uses and developments.
