The University of Illinois Medical Center

The University of Illinois Medical Center is a comprehensive health care and teaching system located in the heart of Chicago. It has leading colleges of medicine, pharmacy, nursing, dentistry, public health, and research programs. One of the nation’s most prominent research and teaching centers, the UIC Medical Center receives $50 million a year in research grants from the National Institutes of Health. The College of Medicine, the largest medical school in the United States, has an internationally renowned faculty of 4,000 (full-time, part-time, and volunteers) at four locations across Illinois, educating nearly 1,300 students each year. In addition, the UIC College of Medicine is one of the most diverse medical schools in the United States, best exemplified by the significant number of minority and disadvantaged students enrolled.

The John H. Stroger, Jr., Hospital of Cook County

John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital of Cook County (formerly Cook County Hospital) opened its doors to the public in December 2002. The hospital provides a full range of inpatient services for adult and pediatric patients in a variety of medical specialties, including services for chronic disease, burns, a level-1 trauma center, and emergency services. As one of the most significant county public works projects to date, Stroger Hospital has roughly 464 beds, 1.2 million square feet of new construction, and approximately 59,000 square feet of renovation, serving all residents of Cook County.

Rush University Medical Center

Rush University Medical Center is an academic medical center that encompasses the 924-bed Presbyterian-St. Luke’s Hospital, the 110-bed Johnston R. Bowman Health Center, and Rush University. Rush University is home to one of the first medical colleges in the Midwest and one of the nation’s top-ranked nursing colleges, as well as graduate programs in allied health and basic sciences. Rush Institutes bring together patient care and research to address major health problems. In keeping with current technology and standards of care, Rush has embarked on a master plan to update and expand their facilities. Annual research funding has grown from $20 million in 1990 to nearly $60 million today.

Jesse Brown VA Medical Center

The Jesse Brown VA Medical Center is part of the Veterans Affairs of Chicago Health Care System (VACHCS). The Chicago-based VA medical center is predominately acute care facilities with strong academic affiliations. VACHCS provides care to approximately 62,000 veterans who reside in the City of Chicago and Cook County, Illinois, and in six counties in northwestern Indiana.
